Dumaguete has had several restaurants sprung up for the past few months and we witnessed some young entrepreneurs handling these businesses quite diligently, I must say. But overall, it’s their eye for capturing what people in Dumaguete want to experience that had them come up with these great franchises and new ideas for restaurants. One of these new establishments that just recently came up is the Captain Ribber’s. Captain Ribber’s Logo. I find their logo quite charming. Boulevard

Gone are the days of smoking wherever you want. Dumaguete is now not only just a city of gentle people, not just a university town… but also a smoke-free city. The implementation of the ordinance to turn Dumaguete smoke-free was launched by a parade on July 14, 2011. It was attended by an estimated number of 10,000 people, and highly supported by the locals. Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria hopes this ordinance will encourage the people, especially the youth, to quit smoking. By being smoke-free, locals and tourists alike will now be assured that Dumaguete’s air will be kept clean and healthy  [ Read More ]

Rianna's Dumaguete Charm

From the outside you would think that the new store on 96 Cervantes Street is not where it should be. If not for the unoccupied second floor that is still done in traditional colonial Spanish-style architecture, one would think that Rianna’s is one of those establishments you see in Hallmark movies– those homey, little arts and craft stores typical of small American towns. The illusion prevails even as you step inside and see the country-style, shabby chic cabinets, vintage wall hangings depicting Campbell soup cans or Marilyn Monroe in weathered wooden frames and even the utility tins and galvanized water  [ Read More ]

The Comfort of Dumaguete

So I’m finally writing something about Dumaguete. It took me a while to write something about my one and only lovely hometown because I do not know where to start. But I guess I have to now since I’ve been thinking of leaving this town and a lot of memories came rushing in. I grew up in the downtown area where I experienced a lot of changes, gradual and not-so-gradual. There used to be this innocent ambiance, but lately things have been different and I guess it came with the changes. I remember the downtown roads weren’t paved yet, the  [ Read More ]

SST Laptop

We are all wary about bringing our laptops to repair shops. There is a chance they would mess with our gadgets, after all. But when these things stop working, we no longer have a choice. We have to get them fixed. Most of you have probably seen SST Laptop at the second floor of Robinsons Place Dumaguete. They just opened not too long ago, but they claim to be your “laptop repair specialist.” I never imagined I would need their services, not until both of my laptops stopped working–at the same time! Realizing I had nothing to lose, I brought  [ Read More ]

Green mangoes with your choice of condiments

Sour is only agreeable in small amounts.  It warns us not to eat a certain  kind of food for it might be harmful.  Well, yeah, that is if you are talking to the wrong crowd. I remember during my grade school days and even up to my high school when breaks and recesses were considered golden.  It was a God-send time for students to work on an assignment that had been put off the night before. Conrad's Diner

There’s a new restaurant in Dumaguete. And as with all new restaurants, they must be put to the test. So off I went to Larena Drive in Motong with my dinner buddies to check out the new place. Near the intersection going to Pulantubig, right in front of Aly Mae US Surplus, is Conrad’s Diner. It is quite confusing, this restaurant. The name of the place as seen from the outside is actually Conrado’s Diner, not Conrad’s Diner. On their menu, however, they refer to it as Conrad’s Diner, and on the receipt, Conrad’s Restaurant. So to prevent confusion, I  [ Read More ]
